Exploring Bologna, Italy
There are a few cities in Italy that most visitors gravitate toward, and Bologna is definitely one of them. While not as popular as say, Rome, it’s in the top 10 and for many it’s right up there with Rome.
Bologna, the capital of the Emilia-Romagna region, is located in North Italy. It’s north of Florence and southeast of Milan.
If you love to eat, Bologna is the right place. Did you know that the Emilia-Romagna region is where tortellini, fettuccine and Parmesan cheese was invented? Don’t think for a moment that Bologna is just about “little” Italy treats. This city is a gastronomic paradise.
Some main attractions in Bologna that might interest you:
- Fortana del Nettuno – This 1566 baroque monument to Neptune really stands out.
- Basilica di San Petronio – Despite starting construction in the 14th century, work still continues to this day.
- Le Due Torri – Towers used to stand for prominence in the community. If your family was important, they had at least one tower. Today, only 25% still remain.
- Santo Stefano – An ancient site that has multiple connected churches. It also has a museum that displays medieval religious works. Be sure to stop by the shop and buy some products made by the monks.
At night the city comes alive. There are well over 200 pubs and lounges in the city. Remember, Bologna is a university town. The night scene is amazing—if that’s your thing.
As more upper-class people move into the city, it becomes trendier. It’s commonplace to find trendy clubs and restaurants now.
History, food, drinks, dancing and people make Bologna one of the best cities in Italy to visit.
